Civil War Battle: Slavery

Group: robbie, gabbie, david.

Because of the Missouri Compromise the US was split in half. The new state of Missouri would be a slave state but no slavery was allowed in the Lousiana territory and north of a line. This caused a great commotion. By dividing the nation North and South politicians made a distinct line between slave and non slave states.

The main cause of slavery in this time was the increased production of cotton due to Eli Whitney's cotton gin. After the gin was invented it caused a huge increase in textile needs in America. With all the cotton being produced they needed people to pick it in the south where it was grown. So more slaves came were brought in. The North did not want slaves. They believed in paid laborers. The south knew slavery was wrong so they "made it right" by calling slaves a "necessary evil."

Harriet Beecher Stowe

Harriet Beecher Stowe published hernovel Uncle Tom’s Cabin in 1852, describing the atrocities of slave life. She was an abolitionist from Connecticut. Her book described slavery at its worst and made people in the North realize how horrible slavery really was. The book sold 300,000 copies in its first year and became the secondbest-selling book of the 19th century. Only the Bible sold more. The novel’spopularity made the South hate the North even more. Southerners said her descriptions of slavery were exaggerated.
