Union Commander, Major Robert Anderson and his men were positioned at Fort Moultrie and Major Anderson was scared for the safety of his men so they went to Fort Sumter on December 26, 1860. On March 4, 1861 Major Robert Anderson indicated that within Fort Sumter there was only a 6 week supply of food remaining. At this point, the Confederate’s patience was minimal, as Major Robert Anderson and his men were foreign (Union) and not Confederates. On April 11, 1861 the Confederate Brigadier General P.G.T. Beauregard had aides demand the fort’s surrender.

The confederate leader was Beauregard General P.G.T. Beauregard. April 12, 1861 after Union would not surrender, Confederates opened fire starting at 4:30am and continued for 34 hours, beginning then Civil War. General Beauregard was able to successfully hold off the union army from the city of Petersburg Virginia and thus saves the capital, Richmond. Beauregard was persuasive to convince Jefferson Davis to admit defeat. Beauregard was able to retire very wealthy because he was affiliated with the Louisiana lottery.
