Civil Rights Movement

The Civil Rights Movement was a time period when African Americans in the United States fought and protested for equal rights. White people were looked at as a superior race and blacks weren't allowed to eat with them or even go to the same schools as them. Some great civil rights leaders are Martin Luther King Jr., Malcolm X, Jesse Jackson, Coretta Scott King,Rosa Parks, and many more. African Americas fought for their equal rights after slavery because once slavery was over that is when segregation began.


1954 - Brown v.s.Board of Education (Topeka,KS)1955 - Emmit Till Murder1955 - Rosa Parks refuses to get out her seat on the bus (Montgomery, AL)1957 -"Little Rock Nine" 9 African American Students were integrated into all white high school (Little Rock, AR)1963 - Martin Luther King Jr. was arested and put in jail for segregation protests in Birmingham , AL.

In result of the Civil Rights movement, African Americans were able to final have the equal rights theyd eserved. Jim Crow laws were banned and African americans were able to go to school with white people and stores and restaraunts had to to remove "all white" signs.

Lasting Impact

One of the triumphs of the Civil Rights Movement is that when you travel through the South today, you do not feel overwhelmed by a residue of grievance and hate.-Alice Walker
