December 1, 1955(Montgomery, Ala.) NAACP member Rosa Parks refuses to give up her seat at the front of the "colored section" of a bus to a white passenger, defying a southern custom of the time. In response to her arrest the Montgomery black community launches a bus boycott, which will last for more than a year, until the buses are desegregated Dec. 21, 1956. As newly elected president of the Montgomery Improvement Association (MIA), Reverend Martin Luther King, Jr., is instrumental in leading the boycott.
On May 17, 1954 the Supreme Court issued a unanimous verdict declaring that, "Seperate educational facilities are inherently unequal."
Martin Luther King Jr. was born January 15th, 1959. He was known as the leader of the Civil Rights Movement. He gave many moving speeches. His most famous speech, "I Have A Dream" has many famous quotes such as, "Our lives begin to end the day we become silent about things that matter.” and, “We cannot walk alone. And as we walk, we must make the pledge that we shall always march ahead. We cannot turn back.” He was a very influential man the will be remebered forever.
James Merideth was the first black man to enroll at the University of Mississippi. There was lots of violence and many riots that caused President Kennedy to send 5,000 federal troops.

July 26Truman signs Executive Order 9981, which states, "It is hereby declared to be the policy of the President that there shall be equality of treatment and opportunity for all persons in the armed services without regard to race, color, religion, or national origin."
