On April 15, 1947, Jackie Robinson becomes the first African-American in the major leagues when he plays his first game with the Brooklyn Dodgers.

Jack was born on January 31, 1919, Georgia. He went to UCLA, where he became the first athlete to letter in four varsity sports: baseball, basketball, football and track. He was awarded the first-ever Rookie of the Year title.

President Truman had been examining the issue of segregation in the armed forces since at least 1947, when he appointed the President's Committee on Civil Rights.

The order stated that "It is hereby declared to be the policy of the President that there shall be equality of treatment and opportunity for all persons in the armed services without regard to race, color, religion, or national origin."
