[2015] Victoria Rozas: Civil Rights Movement

Civil rights are the priviledges and the freedom of citizens. It is something constantly being fought for.

Civil Rights Movement

In 1948 President Truman signed the Excecutive Order 9981 which states that everybody in the armed forces will have the same oppurtunities no matter their color, race or religion. Then, in 1954 the Supreme Court decides that discrimination in schools was unethical and didn't go according to the countrie's beliefs. This was a big step in the process of desegregation. Later on in the late 1950s we can see the riots and conflict caused by protests and campaigns like Martin Luther King's. The 1930s civil rights movement created a path for the civil rights movement in the 1950s.

WHAT HAPPENED?

June Jordan was an african-american poet who wrote about her rights and about the discrimination against african-americans. She focused a lot in encouraging the discriminated to stand up for themselves. One of her most famous poems is My Rights, which is even featured in the Poetry Foundation website.
