Job DescriptionCivil engineers create, improve and protect the environment in which we live. They plan, design and oversee construction and maintenance of building structures and facilities, such as roads, railways, airports, bridges, harbours, dams, irrigation projects, power plants, water and sewage systems. They also design and build tall buildings and large structures, so that they can last for hundreds of years and withstand all weather conditions.Civil engineers can either be consulting engineers who advise on projects and design them, or contracting engineers who turn their plans into reality and maintain the structures once they are built.

Educational RequirementsAspiring civil engineers must complete an Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET) bachelor's degree program in civil engineering. Students take advanced courses in mathematics and sciences including, calculus, physics and chemistry. In addition to these courses, students complete assignments on thermodynamics and structural analysis. Topics in these courses may range from measuring the foundational strength of soil to estimating the stress factors of input materials.

Salary OutlookThe BLS notes that average annual wages for civil engineers were $82,280 as of May 2010. The median 50% earned $77,560. Civil engineers in the commercial and industrial machinery equipment repair and maintenance industry earned the highest annual mean wages of all civil engineers, with salaries of $133,830.
