Chromosomes, genes and DNA

Each human cell has 46 chromosomes. All the DNA is organised into 23 pairs. In the 23 pairs of chromosomes, 22 pairsof them are autosomes. The last pair is apair of sex chromosomes, which determinewhether you are male or female. Females haveXX chromosomes while males have XY chromosomes.

A gene is a section of our DNA. One strand of our DNA contains many genes . Genes are instruction manuals to bulid proteins that make our bodies function. If the gene is normal, the protein works fine. If the instructions in that gene are changed (mutated gene), the protein could be defective and this may cause disorder.

DNA is found it almost every cell. DNA stands for DeoxyriboNucleic Acid. It comes in the form of a twisted ladder scientists call 'double helix', a double-stranded coiled structure.
