Christpher Columbus

Christopher Columbus was an amazing man. He had an extreme amount of gumption, and was always ready for an adventure. Christopher had discovered our great country, America. Sadly, he hadnt thought it was new land, therefore he did not claim it (further along the road Amerigo Vespucci claimed the land, and got the naming rights, thus ''America'' from ''Amerigo''). But Columbus did discover the land. If it hadnt been for him, then America probably would not exist today.

Christopher Columbus sailed on 4 total voyages, all going to the Americas. Columbus was a man who seemed to love adventure. His most well known voyage, was in 1492, where he sailed using 3 ships. The Nina, Pinta, and Santa Maria. His intentions of that voyage, were to be able to reach Asia by going west. But the voyage was so long and exhausting. Eventually, his sailers yelled "Terra! Terra!" Which means land. Columbus was a great captain, who always kept his men in order. If it werent for Columbus, our great counrty would seise to exist. In honor of Christopher Columbus, every year in America we celebrate Columbus Day. Because it is a national holiday, schools take off, and everyone gets a little break. We honor Christopher Columbus, because he deserves a great thank you for discovering our great land.

Columbus had many accomplishments. He was the first European Man to discover the Bahamas, Cuba, Hispaniola, Central America, and the northern coast of South America. Columbus also had discovered a trade route across the Atlantic using winds that blow from east to west. The most amazing thing is that these same winds are now called Trade Winds and are still used by sailors today. Most importantly, Christopher Columbus started a chain of events that would lead to the settlement of the New World.

Christopher Columbus has an interesting life. He was born in Genoa, in 1451. Christopher had alwsays been curious about the world, and landforms it could hold, therefore Columbus had set out on his first journey in 1465. He enjoyed sailing so much, that in 1476 he became a sailor. The most amazing thing, was that one of his ships were sunk by pirates! Eventualy, Christopher fell in love, and married a lady named Felipa Perestrella e Moniz. They lived together in Portugal. Even though Christopher was married, he still had his passion for sailing. So Christopher continued on, and in 1480 Christopher sailed on some of his biggest voyages, and he had sailed between Portugal and Iceland. In 1484, Columbus began to look for sponsors, who would lend him the money, and supplies for voyages. Columbus had wanted to make a new voyage; he wanted to find a western route from Europe to Asia. He asked for help from Portugal and England'but he was refused, which means rejected. In 1485, Christopher and his wife moved to spain. In 1491, Christopher got lucky. Spain had agreed to back him and aid him financially with his voyage. Finally, in 1492, Columbus set sail with three ships the Nina, Pinta, and Santa Maria. In October 1492, Columbus made landfall. He thought he had reached Asia , but he actually had reached the America continent. In March 1493, Columbus returned to Spain. Columbus had sailed accross the coast of what the modern day Bahamas would be, and he returned when he found nothing valuable. In September 1493, Columbus began planning a second voyage. Columbus returned to the Americas looking for treasure, but again he came home empty handed. He left his brothers and a handful of colonists in the Americas. In 1498, Columbus began planning a third trip. Spain had paid for Columbus to go back to America for a third time. When he arrived he found his brothers colony was a mess, and he was arrested for their crimes. In 1502, Columbus took his final voyage. Columbus was lucky, because he was found not guilty for the crimes he was accused of. The king of Spain agreed to pay for one last voyage to America, but again Columbus didn't find a way to Asia, or any treasure. In 1502, Columbus returned back to Spain, where he died.
