PERSONAL LIFEChristopher Columbus was born in Genoa, Italy, in 1451. His exploring career began as a teenager when he was already traveling the seas. He died on May 20, 1506, still believing the islands that he had discovered were in the Asian continent.

In 1476, Columbus settled in Portugal and began planning a voyage to find a new western sea route to Asia in the 1480s.

Christopher Columbus

I was an Italian explorer, but Spain financed my voyages to the Caribbean coastline and islands.

In search of a western route to Asia, I landed and left European settlements in the Americas.

Columbus' began his second expedition on Sept. 25, 1493 with 17 ships and 1,200 to 1,500 men. They established a colony in Hispaniola and explored island coasts

Spain's King Ferdinand II and Queen Isabella finally agreed to pay for Columbus' voyage that set sail on August 3, 1492 with three ships and 93 men.

On October 11, 1492, Columbus landed on an island. He thought he had made it to Asia, and called this area the Indies. He left some men in a fort on Hispaniola and returned to Spain in January.

Starting his third voyage in 1498, Columbus explored the Caribbean coast of South America. After complaints from the Hispaniola Colony, Columbus was arrested and sent back to Spain.

On his last voyage in 1502, when Columbus was exploring the Central American coast, he and all fof his four ships sank and he had to be rescued.
