Christopher Columbus


LifeChristopher Columbus was born between October 31st, 1450 and October 30th, 1451, and died on May 20th, 1506. He was an Italian explorer, navigator, colonizer and citizen of the Republic of Genoa. He completed four voyages across the Atlantic Ocean. Those voyages, and his efforts to establish permanent settlements on the island of Hispaniola, initiated the Spanish colonization of the New World.


LegacyChristopher Columbus opened up the Americas for Spanish conquest, which provided Europe with wealth. Discovery of the New World also brought Europe new food, religion, politics, and population growth.

1st expedition: August 3rd, 1492. Took possession for Spain and discovered other islands in the neighborhood.2nd expedition: October, 1493 - 1496. Founded a new colony near Hispaniola and discovered Jamaica.3rd expedition: 1498. He sailed across the mouth of the Orinoco River (in present Venezuela) and realized that he saw a continent, but had to hurry back to Hispaniola.4th expedition:1502. He hoped he might still find Asia or Japan, but faced hardship. He was rescued back to Spain, where he died.
