Christopher Columbus

Christopher Columbus (1451-1506) was an Italian explorer. He became famous for sailing west across the Atlantic Ocean in 1492. In this journey, he traveled from Spain to islands in the Caribbean Sea.Columbus was born in Genoa, on the northwest coast of Italy. As a young man, he sailed on trading ships. In 1476, he settled in Lisbon, Portugal. At the time, Portuguese traders were trying to find a way to Asia by sailing all the way around Africa. Columbus thought there was an easier way—by sailing westward. He asked the King of Portugal to give him money for a voyage across the Atlantic Ocean, but the king refused. So Columbus went to King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella of Spain. They agreed to give him the money.

He was the first European to discover the Bahamas, Cuba, Hispaniola, Central America, and the northern coast of South America. Columbus also discovered a trade route across the Atlantic using winds that blow from east to west. Christopher Columbus began a chain of events that would lead to the settlement of the New World.

On August 3, 1492, three ships—the Pinta, the Nina, and the Santa Maria—set sail from Spain. Columbus was captain of the Santa Maria. On October 12, 1492, Columbus reached an island in the Caribbean Sea. He called it San Salvador, but no one really knows which Caribbean island he landed on. He returned to Spain in 1493.Columbus made three more voyages to the Americas between 1493 and 1504. During these voyages, he explored the Caribbean Islands and the coasts of Central and South America.
