5: The setting up of the Church

Christianity was never set up as a structured religion before because it was illegal and was practiced in secrecy. So Constantine had to set it up. In 325 C.E., the first meeting of the Council of Nicea was held. Here, the christian community met and decided how the church would operate, they assigned the bishops, the set Christ's birthday, and they set a standard for the rituals and scriptures in all the churches. At this meeting they also came up with the Equal Trinity of Faith, which is "The Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit are all equivilant".

The Birth of Christ took place in 4 B.C.E. when the Romans took rule of the Jewish middle eastern territory. At age 30, Jesus was endorsed by a Jewish preacher of "moral reform", known as John the Baptist. He has Jesus travel to rural areas of Glilee and Judea preaching and displaying his "healing powers". As the years went on Jesus gained more and more followers, or as he called them, "disciples".

Jesus stages and entry into Jerusalem during passover, which is a religious holiday, in 30 C.E. Jesus started to yell at all of the merchants for selling stuff next to one of the temples because he said it was disrespectful. So the government arrested him for disturbing the peace. Pentius Pilate has a job to keep peace and a good relationship between local leaders He tried to send Jesus to Herod in Galilee, but they sent him back. So he sentenced Jesus to crucifixion; this wasn't an unordinary punishment. They intended to make an example out of Jesus and crush the christian movement.

Once Jesus was put in his grave that was blocked off by a big stone. Three days after Jesus' crucifixion, one of his followers claimed that Jesus rose from the dead. He spread the word that Jesus ascended from heaven and promised to return. This is what kept the christian faith alive after Jesus, their main leader, had passed away.

Christianity was outlawed and anyone who was christian was banished from Rome or killed and tortured. Once Constantine became ruler of 1/4tth of Rome, he decided to march into Italy in 312 C.E. in an attempt to shut down Maxentius. When he marched into Italy he had put Christian sumbols on his banners and on his shields. He claimed that the "sky" told him "with these symbols, you will conquer". He did end up winning against Maxentius. He officially made Christianity the favored religion of the imperial family.
