Many of Mrs. Good's students are in Stage 2 of reading development. What is fluent reading? What reading characteristics can Mrs. Good expect from her students at the end of the stage?

Stage 1 Reading- 1st-2nd Graders* Learn to use letter-sound relationships to decode printed words not immediately recognized.*Children learn to recognize words & understand material in books they read. *What children read is at a much lower level than what they can understand from those talking around them.*Often children read slowly word-by-word as they try to figure out what a sentence means*Some students experience difficulty acquiring beginning decoding skills because they have problems with the phonological aspects of language.

Scenario: Many authorities believe that reading skills occur in several stages. Mrs. Good is a newly trained 3rd grade teacher who wants to have in-depth understanding of the reading development process. The students in her classroom present a wide range of reading skills. Mrs. Good also is the parent of a preschool child and she would like to be involved in helping her child learn to read.

1. Mrs. Good's preschool child is in the prereading stage (birth -6 yrs). What can Mrs. Good expect to see her child doing with books at this age, and what prereading activities can Mrs. Good do with her child?

Phonological Awareness Tasks: 1. WORD ODDITY: *Students recognize words as a unit of language. *Child compares 3-4 words that are spoken to them. (ie) pig, hill, pal - which does not belond with initial sound*Child then tells teacher which word does not belong based on initial sound they hear.* Tested on Initial, Medial or Final Sound* Students do not have to determine syllables of a word. *Oddity task consist of:Alliteration - based on initial soundsRhyme Detection - based on medial or final sounds

2. Sentence Segmentation by WordsChild listens to a sentence & counts the number of words heard. The student can tap or clap out the words heard in order to count them.(ie)"Minnie chased after the ball."5 words
