Chocolate is made from coca beans, which grow in tropical climates like Central America. To make the sweet treat, you grind up the beans and and sugar and water. Then you stir it until it is thick. Most modern chocolate is made in a factory, but tourists in places like Costa Rica enjoy making it by hand!
Chocolate chip cookies were invented by Ruth Graves Wakefield. She owned the Toll House Inn in Whitman, Massachusetts, a very popular restaurant that featured home cooking in the 1930s. Her cookbook, Toll House Tried and True Recipes, was first published in 1936 by M. Barrows & Company, New York.
