THE PEOPLE'S REPUBLIC OF CHINA

In 2008, Beijing hosted the Summer Olympics! It was the first time that it was hosted in China and the 3rd time that it was hosted in Asia! It created a a source of national pride!

China is located west of the Pacific Ocean andnorth of the Indian Ocean. It is in Southeast Asia. It's bordering countries include Mongolia, Russia, Nepal, Vietnam, and Thailand.

China is emerging as the world's top economy. However, the speedy economy creates massive amounts of environmental pollution. There is an increasing amount of cars, taxis, and buses which leads to smog and unhealthy air pollution in most major cities. China's development has affected the habitat of many animals thriving there. That includes the beloved panda bear, which has been driven to near extinction. China is a very vast country with many types of environments. China also has a long history of farming. A unique style of farming that they have in China is where they convert mountains into layered farmland in which they can utilize. In the north during the winter, enormous chunks of ice are cut out of rivers and crafted into sculptures. These sculptures are then shown off at festivals.

China is emerging as the world's top economy. It improved peoples' quality of life dramatically in the last 20-30 years. However, one of the downsides to the speedy economy is that it creates massive amounts of environmental pollution. Because the cities are so densely populated, there are many cars, taxis, buses, etc. that are producing carbon dioxide. This leads to smog and unhealthy air pollution in most major cities However, per person, China produces way less pollution than countries in the western world. China'sdevelopment and has affected the habitat of many animals thriving there. That includes the beloved panda bear, which has been driven to near extinction.

In the last 20-30 years, China opened its doors to the foreign world. Before then, very few Chinese knew what the outside world was like. Nowadays, young people are beginning to follow more westernized ways of life. China is a mass exporter of goods. Machinery, electronics, toys, clothing are among the top exports of China. It`s main imports are fossil fuels. Jackie Chan is a well known Chinese actor. He stars in hollywood action/comedy films. The Dalai Lama is a religous leader in Tibet. He won a Nobel Peace Prize for his efforts on advocacy for Tibetans inside and outside of Tibet.Yao Ming is a retired NBA basketball player. He was the first China born player to play in the NBA.

With its 5000 years of history, China is a place with culture and traditions. The official language is Mandarin, while Cantonese is also spoken around the Canton Province and Hong Kong. The diversities of foods in China are great. Some of the famous dishes are dumplings, Peking duck, noodles, and stir fry. The panda bear has become an icon for China. However, China has a wide biodiversity which includes the South Chinese Tiger, the Asian Black Bear, and the Red Panda, just to name a few.

China has a communist government along with many of the countries bordering it. China has one official time zone despite it's large size. As a result, some parts of Western China use an unofficial time zone that is 2 hours behind. China is classified as a region with medium human development (basically quality of life).There are 22 provinces (23 if you include Taiwan), 5 autonomous regions, and 4 directly controlled municipalities in China.Ranging from tropical to sub-arctic, China has a wide array of climates. Seasonly monsoons occur along with the dry climates of a desert. China has mountainous regions, plains, plateaus, deserts, basins, rugged hills, and rivers.China is home to approximately 19.3% of our world's populationwith 1,351,450,000 inhabitants. Most of the population is situated along the coastline.
