Chibok Kidnappings
On 15 April 2014, news broke of a mass kidnapping in the town of Chibok in Borno State, Nigeri - 276 female students were abducted from school by the Boko Haram terrorist group. Sparking outrage worldwide, people from all over the globe demanded their return. Over the summer months of that year press coverage died down and by the fall it was almost quiet. The glaring problem, however, was the fate of the young girls taken from their families.
Reports surfaced seven months later in November of that year - the girls were being forced into marriage to soldiers of the Boko Haram group and many were impregnated. By January of the following year the girls were being used for suicide bombings.
Could it really be lack of economic interest as a key reason media coverage has dwindled, despite initial masive celebrity attention?
