CHEMICAL REACTIONSCade ImmMrs. LazarScince 86 March 2015
Synthesis is when two reactants unite to form a completely new compound!Ex: N2 + 2O2 = 2NO2
Combustion is the reaction in which one reactant will always be oxygen and others will often be carbon and hydrogen.Ex: CH4 + 2O2 = CO2 + 2H2O
Decomposition occurs when a single compund is divided into smaller, simpler products.Ex: 2H2O = 2H2 + O2
What is a Chemical Reaction?A chemical reaction is the process in which one set of substances (reactants) are transformed into another set of substances (products).
Endothermic or Exothermic?Endothermic Reaction:Takes in and collects energy, producing a decrease in temperature during a reaction.Exothermic Reaction:Releases energy to produce an increase in temperature.
Evidence of a Chemical Reaction:-Color Change-Formation of a Precipitate-Formation of Gas-Temperature Change
Properties of Water Water is a product of a synthesis reaction, during which a hydrogen reactant combines with an oxygen reactant. Water has a freezing point at 32 degrees Fahrenheit and a boiling point at 210 degrees Fahrenheit. Water can be a liquid, solid, or gas, but its most common state is a liquid. Water's density is around 1000 kg/m cubed. The color of water varies, however is most presented in a clear or blue. Water is an example of a covalent bond.Ex: 2H2 + O2 = 2H20
Endothermic
