BASIC INFORMATIONScandium is a transition metalGroup 3# of Protons = 21# of Neutrons = 24# of Electrons = 21# of Electron Shells = 4# of valence electrons = 2Configuration = 2-8-9-2Pronunciation = SCAN-dee-umOn exposure to air, the appearance of this element changes from silvery white to a slightly yellowish or pinkish color.
PROPERTIES/USESChemically similar to rare earth elements. It reacts readily with acids, but does not react easily with oxygen in the air.Exceptional electrical conductivity and heat stabilization qualities.
FUN FACTS$235 US for 3.05gWhere can you find scandium? - in the gem aquamarine,- daylight spectrum metal halide arc lights- alloys (a few percent of scandium strengthens aluminium for bicycle frames and baseball bats).- tracer in oil wells/ pipelines
HISTORYEkaboron (similar to boron) was predicted by Russian chemist Dmitri Mendeleev and was found in 1879 by Swedish chemist Lars Nilson. He named it scandium. This discovery was important because it proved the periodic law.
FACTSScandium exists in nature in its oxide form. It is very difficult to reduce to its pure elemental state. There is only one known naturally occurring isotope of scandium. There are 24 known radioactive isotopes.
