Charon and the River Styx

Who Is Charon?

Charon is the ferryman of the dead. He takes the deceased on a river named Styx to the underworld where they are to stay there until they start a new life. The souls that Charon takes on his boat is brought to him by Hermes (Mercury). Charon only excepts the souls that have been burried properly. The ride to the underworld cost a Coin. Those who can not afford the trip, or if Charon denies them, are doomed to wander the banks of Styx for a hundred years. Living souls who wanted to visit the underworld had to pay a golden bough from the Cumaean Sibyl.

What is Styx?

Styx is a river in Greek Mythology the formed the boundary between earth and the underworld. There are five rivers total in the underworld and Styx is one of them. Charon takes souls down the river Styx when they die to the underworld

Stories about Charon-During Hercules's 12 labors, he forced Charon to take him to Hades, Pluto(Hades) punished Charon with a year in chains.

More About the Life of CaronCharon's life is kind of a mystery. All we know is that he is the son of Erebus and Nyx. He is known to have superhuman strength and unable to get hurt in any way. We also know that he is a demon and constantly has a bitter attitude. Some of his sibblings are Moros, Ponos, Hemera, Limos, and Aether
