A fossil is preserved remains or traces of animals, plants, and other organisms from the remote past. There are four different types of fossils. They are cast fossils, trace fossil, mold fossils, and body fossils. The most common fossil is the trace fossil. Fossil can teach us about our past. They can show us when and where many organisms lived. There are many ways a fossil can form. One of the most common ways for a fossil to form is for the remains of the animal to solidify in a rock over a long period of time.
