Horses were introduced to the Plains Native Americans by the Spanish. The horse helped them to hunt more effectively.

Characteristics of the Plains Native Americans

Many Plains Native Americans were nomadic. They lived in portable homes called teepees. They were made of buffalo since there wasn't much wood.

Each village had a village council and the council elected a chief. Men were mainly in charge of these councils.

The Plains Native Americans hunter / gatherers. They hunted buffalo. Some farmed and grew crops like corn.

Within the Plains, millions of buffalo roamed. The buffalo provided food, clothing, and shelter. Plains Native Americans would scavenge for berries or roots.

Plains Native Americans believed everything has a spirit. These spirits controlled all animals and plants.
