Pirates of the Caribbean
Another defense mechanism is repression. Repression banishes anxiety-arousing wishes from consciousness. Elizabeth seems bored of her life and I believe she doesn't know herself very well. By that I mean, she deosn't know what to do for her future. I see she is curious espeaically when it comes to pirates. She has a rebel streak , but she always keep her tongue in check when she wants to and doesn't voice her doubts. When she goes on the adventure of the life time, she changes into an independent woman and knows what she wants.
Elizabeth Swann
Defense mechanisms, according to Freud, are tactics that reduce or redirect anxiety y distorting reality. Displacement is a defense mechanism that diverts sexual or aggressive impulses toward an object or person that is psychologically more acceptable than the one that aroused the feelings. Elizabeth trys to deny or bury the feelings she has for Will Turner. She knows that a realtionship between her and Will can not happen. Both coming from different social circles. Will comes to leave a sword at Governor Swann's and sees Elizabeth. We know that Will has feelings for Elizabeth. Elizabeth feels anger, but she is angry with herself. She takes that anger on Will and they leave in less than friendly terms. She calling him a lowly blacksmith's apprentice.
Freud's personality stucture includes id, ego and the superego. The id's unconscious psychic energy constantly strives to satify basic drives to survive, reproduce, and aggress. The id operates on the pleasure principle. It seeks immediate gratification.Because Elizabeth was taken hostage by the Black Pearl crew memebers, she needed to think of surviving. She needed to think like a pirate and play their game. She needed to be brave and hold her own against a group of pirates. Her ego is telling her to act before thinking, but in order to get her pleasure( getting home safe), she needs to think beforing jumping to conclusions. The superego makes her think like a noble woman. She needs to be taken care of. Elizabeth is out of her comfort zone and needs to adapt to her new surroudings. When she realizes that Will is trying to rescue her, she finds her new pleasure(her ego taking over) and trys to get to Will, when knowing that they can't be together. Their love, in the end wins against all odds.
Freud's theory on the psychosexual stages states that the id's pleasure-seeking energies focus on distinct pleasure sensitive sreas of the body called erogenous zones. During the genital stage, he believes it is the maturaltion of sexual interests. During the whole movie Elizabeth and Will were always very passionate. As seen down below, they need eachother, but they sometimes got frustrated with eachother.
SummaryElizabeh Swan is the daughter of the governor. She is first introduced when Will is found. She notices his gold medallion and realzes that its a pirate's medallion. Ms. Swann takes it, in fear that Will be hurt if someone finds out. Eight years later, Elizabeth is all gown up and her father wishes her to wear a gown from London to Captain Norrington's promotion ceremony. Before they leave, Will arrives to leave a sword. Both Will and Elizabeth have feelings for eachother which is very easily noticable when they look at eachother. Elizabeth puts Will in his place when she realizes that a relationship between them can't happen. Elizabeth head to the cermony where Captain Norrington and her chat. He says that he is not married and thinks that Ms. Swann is a fine woman. Elizabeth loses focus due to her corset being too tight and faints which she ends up falling in the water. Then the medallion gives off a pulse. Jack Sparrow lucky saves her. Then he holds her hostage when the Captin shows up with the marines. Elizabeth is alright unitl she is taken by the crew members of the ship, the Black Pearl. She gives a fake name, Elizabeth Turner. She hides her true identity, but she is still in danger. From there, the adventure begins by Will and Jack trying to rescue her. During the movie, Elizabeth falls more in love with Will Turner and finally finds herself. She is brave, stubborn, and curious through her journey on the Black Pearl.
