Chaitan Volcano

MT. Chaiten

The Chaiten volcano is a cinder cone volcano located on the flank of the michinmahuida volcano in southern Chile. it sits above the peru-chile subduction zone (the nazca plate is being subducted under the South American plate). it is an oceanic/continental subduction.

The Chaiten volcano was last active 9400 years ago up until May, 2, 2008 where it was violently erupting. the volcano caused numerous plumes, pyroclastic flows, ash, lahars, effeted the weather and created lightening, and it built a new lava dome on the north side of the old one.
