Chains, by Laurie Halse Anderson, is a book about a young slave named Isabel and her life during the American Revolution. The book begins with Isabel’s excitement to start a new life, as she was recently freed from her late owner. However, due to the inability to present the legal document granting her freedom, Isabel and her sister, Ruth, are sold back into slavery. Now her new owners are the Locktons: a loyalist family from New York City. With this new trade, Isabel’s entire life is about to change and she must learn to survive, so both she and her sister can eventually gain what is rightfully theirs: freedom. Chains is a great book to use in the middle school grades, specifically seventh grade. It is during this time when students are learning about the horrors of slavery and the history and politics of the American Revolution. Therefore, this book would be an excellent resource for English and Social Studies teachers to use for team teaching. The story would help students to receive more of a personal or sympathetic perspective of these difficult topics, which would also guide student’s overall comprehension.
