Ch.6: Chemical Reactions

#1: Observing Chemical Change

Chemistry is the study of matter an how it changes. Changes of matter can be physical and chemical. Physical properties that can be seen without changing the sibstance. Chemical changes can be seen with changing the substance. Endothermic reaction is the total making and breaking of bonds in the absorption of matter. Exothermic reactions is the making and breaking of bonds results in a release of energy.

A fire triangle is what is needed for a sucessful. The parts of a fire traianlge is fuel, heat, and oxygen. Conbustion is the reaction between oxygen and a fuel. Fuel is a material that releases energy when it burns. Some fuels are wood, oil, gasoline, paper, and many others.

#4: Fire and Fire Safety

Activation energu is the minimum amount of energy needed to start a chemical reaction. All chemical reactions require a certain amount of energy to get started. Factors that affect rates of reaction include surface area, temperature, concentration, and the prescence of catalysts or inhibitors. Concentraiten is the amount of a substance in a given volume. Catalyst is a material that increases that rate of the reaction by lowering the activation energy. Enzymes are natural catalysts. An inhibitor is a material used to decrease that rate of reaction.

#3: Controlling Chemical Reactions

Chemical equations use chemical formulas and other symbols instead of words to summarize a reaction. Chemical reactions are in the form of: Reactant +Reactant -> Product + Product. The law od conservation of matter says matter cannot be created or destroyed. Coefficents is the number placed in front of a chemical formula in an equation. The types of chemical reactions are synthesis (things coming together), decomposition (two things coming together), and replacement (things replace eachother).
