[2011] mason: Cerebral Palsy

The term cerebral palsy refers to any one of a number of neurological disorders that appear in infancy or early childhood and permanently affect body movement and muscle coordination but don’t worsen over time. It is caused by abnormalities in parts of the brain that control muscle movements

The brain damage is caused by brain injury or abnormal development of the brain that occurs while a child’s brain is still developing — before birth, during birth, or immediately after.Cerebral palsy affects body movement, muscle control, muscle coordination, muscle tone, reflex, posture and balance. It can also impact fine motor skills, gross motor skills and oral motor functioning.

Intrauterine Hypoxia – This means insufficient oxygen getting to the baby’s brain while the baby is growing inside its mother’s womb. This can happen because of something wrong with the mother, the baby, or the umbilical cord

Birth Asphyxia – This happens when a baby is deprived of oxygen during the process of labor and delivery. It occurs most often in cases of delayed, extended, or abnormal delivery. The lack of sufficient oxygen causes brain damage that results in cerebral palsy.

Physical Injury – Physical trauma to a baby during delivery can result in brain damage and cerebral palsy, particularly if the injury is to the baby’s head.
