Cell Organelles

The Cell Wall is located outisde the Cell Membrane. It's used as support for the Cell Membrane and is only located in plant cells.

Centrioles are located only in animal cells. They are made of microtubules and aid in cell division.

Chloroplasts are located all over plant cells. They have a double membrane and contain DNA. Their main job is to produce and store food.

Cytoplasm is located everywhere. It is made of cytosol (a jelly-like substance outside the nucleus). It provides protection that allows movement of organelles.

The Cell Membrane is the outer covering of a cell. It has a lipid bilayer which is a double layer of phospholipids that's in constant motion and can repair itself. It acts as a protective barrier around the cell and allows substances in and out.

The Nucleus is located in the center of the cell. It has a double membrane (nuclear envelope) with holes (nuclear pores) that allow material in and out of the nucleus. It's the information center of the cell.

The Mitochondria is all over the cell. It's kidney shaped with a double membrane. The inner membrane (cristae) is folded to increase surface area where chemical reactions release energy. Cellular respiration converts food energy to ATP (energy source of cells) C6H12O6+O2=CO2+H20+energy

The Smooth ER is located near the nucleus and throughout the cell. It's a membrane system and moves material through the cell. It makes steroids, lipids, and cholesterol.

The Rough ER is located near the nucleus and throughout the cell. It's a membrane system and moves material through the cell. It makes proteins and moves them through the cell.

Lysosomes are all over eukaryotic cells. They are single membrane sacs containing enzymes. They work as a recycling center. Enzymes break down worn and damaged cell structures and foriegn material.

The Golgi Apparatus is located in multiple places around the cell. It looks like a stack of pancakes and stores proteins. It prepares them for export out of the cell.

The Cytoskeleton is inside a eukaryotic cell. It's long protein strands offer structural support and movement for organelles.

The Vacuole is located inside the cytoplasm. It's membrane bound structure works as storage , mainly to hold water, but can have food, salt or pigments.
