CELL DIVISION
Mitosis Facts
- Living things grow by cell division- Cell division replaces dead or worn out cells- The process that cells go through to divide is called mitosis- During mitosis, a single cell splits into two identical daughter cells- At the end of mitosis, there are twice as many cells than there were at the beginning.
Stages of Mitosis
Prepare for division. Chromatin tightens into chromosomes.
Chromosomes line up in the center of the cell.
Spindle attaches to centromere of chromosomes and pulls half to left side of cell, half to right side.
Two nuclear envelopes appear around each group of chromosomes.
Cytoplasm "pinches" and splits into two pieces, producing two daughter cells.
