Catcher in the Rye

The Catcher in the RyeBy J.D. Salinger

Holden- 17 years old, very depressed, lonely, doesn't like anything

Phoebe- 10 years old, very smart, good relationship with Holden, she likes to read and write stories.

THE RED HAT- The hat represents the transition between childhood and adulthood. While he is wearing it, he is a child. While it's off, he is an adult.THE DUCKS/POND- The ducks and pond also represent child going into adulthood. Holden doesn't have anywhere to go, but the ducks do. The ducks fly off and migrate. The Pond being half frozen is showing that Holden is like one half child, one half adult.

"In the spring time an all? Do you happen to know where they go in the winter time, by any chance?" Holden is trying to find out where he should go, by finding out where the ducks go.

"I mean if they're running and they don't look where they are going I have to come out from somewhere and catch them. That's all I'll do all day. I'd just be the catcher in the rye and all."Holden wants to "catch" kids from entering adulthood.
