Built by the Spanish between 1672 and 1695 out of coral stone called coquina, the Castillo de San Marcos is the oldest masonry fort in the United States.

Originally a strategic military post used by the Spanish to defend their New World territory, the fort has flown many banners, including the British, Confederate and the US flags.
