Until the invention of electrophysiologic testing in the 1940s, carpal tunnel syndrome commonly was thought to be the result of compression of the brachial plexus by cervical ribs and other structures in the anterior neck region. Carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) is caused predominantly by compression of the median nerve at the wrist because of hypertrophy or edema of the flexor synovium.

To make a diagnosis of carpal tunnel doctors would review your symptoms and would conduct a physical examination. Some doctors recommend an X-ray of the affected wrist and others recommend an Electromygram or a Nerve conduction study.

Treatment for Carpal tunnel include rest, ice, wrist splints, cortisone injections, and surgery.
