History- Carbon has been known since ancient times in the form of soot, charcoal, graphite and diamonds. French scientist Antoine Lavoisier named carbon. He carried out a variety of experiments to reveal its nature. In 1779, Swedish scientist Carl Scheele showed that graphite burned to form carbon dioxide. So he proved that there was one then just Carbon.Found- It was found in underwater sediments and sedimentary rocks.

Formed- Carbon is formed by soot, charcoal, graphite, amorphous and diamonds. Amorphous carbon is formed when a material containing carbon is burned without enough oxygen for it to burn completely. Graphite, one of the softest materials known, is a form of carbon that is primarily used as a lubricant. Diamond, the third naturally occurring form of carbon, is one of the hardest substances known.

Isolated- One way to isolate carbon is to burn hydrocarbons with insufficient oxygen. That is how charcoal has been made for hundreds of years. If enough air is present the carbon is burned all the way to CO2.Uses- coal, oil, natural gas, producing polymers, fibres, paints solvents, plastics, and wood.

Uses of Carbon- carbon, fiber, tow, fabric, carbon filamentsRole- Is the basic unit of all lifeAffects on the environment- negatively influence the quality of our air and increase the greenhouse effect. Which is form carbon dioxide. Carbon tax, taxing companies directly based on the amount of carbon they put into the atmosphere.

Cool Facts- Carbon can form about 10 million compounds with almost all other elements from Mendeleev Periodic Table. Although Carbon forms many compounds, it is considered a non reactive element. All plastics are made up of Carbon polymers.
