James Marshall was a carpenter and sawmill operator who discovered the first piece of gold in Califnorina in 1848.

Thousands of gold miners traveled by land and sea from near and very far to California.

The California population increased from 20,000 people in 1848, to over 100,000 by 1850

By 1852, gold mining peaked after 81 million dollars worth of gold was pulled from the ground. After this year, the amount of gold mining decreased as people went from independent work (mining for gold) to wage labor.
