Caitlyn - Bruce Jenner

"Kimberly says, 'If you do go out, you've got to rock it baby!',"

It’s a carefully worded acknowledgement of transgender pioneers that couldn’t be better timed. Orange Is the New Black star Laverne Cox applauded Jenner Tuesday morning in an open letter that also offered a nuanced reaction to the Vanity Fair cover, tapping into an ongoing conversation about the conflict of traditional beauty standards and transgender identity. “Yes, Caitlyn looks amazing and is beautiful,” she wrote, “but what I think is most beautiful about her is her heart and soul, the ways she has allowed the world into her vulnerabilities.”

Bruce Jenner was once hailed as the greatest athlete in the world and later became a reality television star with one of the world’s most famous families. Now, the former Olympian is revealing a secret that has caused him turmoil for decades.“For all intents and purposes, I’m a woman,” Jenner told ABC’s Diane Sawyer in an exclusive interview that aired Friday in a special two-hour edition of ABC News’ “20/20.”“People look at me differently. They see you as this macho male, but my heart and my soul and everything that I do in life -- it is part of me,” Jenner, 65, said. “That female side is part of me. That’s who I am.”In hours of interviews with Sawyer in New York and California, Jenner detailed his internal struggles with being transgender, which he said he has wrestled with since childhood.During the interview, Jenner referred to himself using male pronouns and ABC News has chosen to follow his lead, though he also referred to himself as “Bruce” and “her.”“I look at it this way—Bruce always telling a lie. He’s lived a lie his whole life about who he is. And I can’t do that any longer,” Jenner said.“My brain is much more female than it is male,” he added. “It’s hard for people to understand that, but that’s what my soul is.”

The Internet cheered Caitlyn Jenner's coming out in Vanity Fair as a watershed moment in transgender visibility. It's not often that someone becomes a cover model and a trending topic on social media and breaks a Guinness World Record for fastest Twitter account to reach 1 million followers. But many were quick to point out that there's still a lot of work to be done for transgender equality. As transgender activists noted on social media, Jenner's experience is far from the reality of most transgender people, who can only dream of experiencing the same support from their families and society

Yeah it's great the media is paying attention to trans women. But Caitlyn Jenner and the reality of most trans women are worlds apart— Sophia Banks (@sophiaphotos)

Sending all my love to my trans sisters who didn't get this sort of beautiful welcoming from the world. You deserve to be celebrated too. 💜— steph. (@femmemystique_
