Buchenwald concentration camp opens

German civilians vist the Buchenwald Concentration camp

On July 15, 1937, Buchenwald concentration camp opened on Mount Ettersberg. Originally intended for those who oppose German forces and undesirables, it soon was filled by Jewish male political prisoners of East Germany, becoming one of the largest concentration camps of Germany. Women did not join the camp till the late 1943. Around 240,000 inmates of over 30 nationalities pass throught the camp, 56,000 of which died due to cruel treatment and conditions.
