Brown Algae(Phaeophyceae)

Brown algae undergo sexual reproduction via equal amounts of haploid male and female spores. Most have the reproductive pattern of haploid to diploid, however some algae which inhabits briny, salty water reproduces asexually. This examplifies how the brown algae can withstand both freshwater and saltwater habitats.

Not only are they useful in a deep sea ecosystem as a means for providing food and shelter for marine life, but they are useful to us too! Brown algae contains alginic acid which is commonly used in textiles, paper, water-proof and fire-proof materials, and thickening cosmetics and icecream.

They're autotrophs who provide energy via photosynthesis (with the extra help of fucoxanthin pigment for a wider range b/c of limited deep sea light) to herbavorous organisms and bottom dwellers such as sea urchins (when it sinks to decompose). The most well known type is kelp!

Contains chlorophyll a, c, ' fucoxanthin pigment which is unique to brown algae. They also are the only ones to have air bladders for reaching maximum sunlight and are rooted

Alginic acid found in brown algae is used to make algenate which creates the positive mold in life casting (shout out to the 3-D art people)
