Thanks to the vastness of the British Empire, these sports spread throughout much of the world in the 18th and 19th centuries and remain very popular to this day.Britain has produced some of the world’s most popular rock bands. The Beatles and the Rolling Stones launched the British Invasion in the mid-1960s. Later bands like Led Zeppelin, The Cure, Black Sabbath, The Who, The Clash, Radiohead, Coldplay, Oasis, Blur, Muse, and Pink Floyd are some of the many British groups which also became widely popular in the U.S. and around the globe.London, Britain’s capital city, hosted the Olympic Games in 1908, 1948, 2012. It is the only city to host the Olympic Games three times!

GEOGRAPHYBritain is a part of the continent of Europe. It is also known as England, and is one of the four nations that makes up the United Kingdom (Wales, Scotland, and Northern Ireland are the others).The capital city of Britain is London. London is also Britain’s largest city.The area of Britain is 94, 525 square miles, which makes it slightly smaller than Oregon!Scotland is on Britain’s northern border and the North Sea is on Britain's eastern border. The English Channel borders Britain to the south, while Wales and the Irish Sea border Britain to the west.The Pennines are Britain’s main mountain system. The Lake District in northern Britain is famous for its beautiful mountain scenery and many lakes. Along the English Channel, hills form the steep white cliffs of Dover.The London Bridge, which stretches over the River Thames, is one of Britain’s most famous landmarks. The Big Ben clock tower, which stands next to Westminster Palace, is another popular attraction.
