Brain Health Project (Sleep)

Adolescent Brain and Sleep

Evidence 1: webMD.comEvidence 2: sleepfoundation.orgEvidence 3: "Coping with excessive sleepiness" article

Problem:Can I improve my brain health if I get 8-9 hours of sleep per night?Research:1.)Sleep impairs attention ,alertness, concentration, reasoning and problem solving.2.)Sleep can help you eat better and manage the stress of being a teen.3.) Teenagers (10 - 17 Years old) should get 8.5 to 9.25 hours of sleep time every night for optimum brain performance at school.Hypothesis: If I get 8 - 9 hours of sleep then my brain will perform better in school.Experiment: Materials-~Pillows~Warm Blanket~Door Shut~Lights off~TV turned downProcedure:~Turn TV down~Turn lights off~Lay down~Repeat daily for 13 days

Analysis:Parts of my data table that stuck out to me are I went up and came back down and I was never really consistant at the multiplication scores. In my case study data I noticed that I met my goal, my shortest sleep was 7.5 hours and my longest was 10 hours. I also noticed that when my hamster didn't run on her wheel I had more energy. In my case study I noticed when my hamster didn't run on her wheel I had more energy then when she did run. I noticed my scores never stayed up they were all over the place. My best scores were on Test 2 for both Memory and the Fact Recall. Conclusion:The hypothesis for my case study was, If I get 8-9 hours of sleep then my brain health will increase. My hypothesis was supported because both of the brain health tests for test 5 were higher then test 1. The problem for my case study was, Can I improve my brain health if I get 8-9 hours of sleep? Based on my data, my brain health did improve but on my tests the data was all over the place. Some errors in my data were when we were taking the test there was distractons. Next time I could set an alarm clock for when I go to sleep and when I wake up. In the future I want to learn more about how different activites affect how the adolescent brain preforms.
