Specific Learning Impairment-Acquire language at a slower rate -Difficulty with functional words-Linguistic ability is the only impairment--> Does NOT derive from general intelligence
-Children cannot fully acquire a langauge unless they are exposed to it during a "critical period" in early childhood-If they are not exposed to it, they will develop agrammatic language -Critical period is linked to brain lateralization (speech in left hemisphere)

Lateralization
Critical Period
Right hemisphere can take over language abilities if left hemisphere is removed at a very early age
Sudying split brains & using imaging techonolgy can help isolate functions to specific regions of the brain
