Bluefin Tuna

Bluefin Tuna

Are the largest tuna and can live up to 40 years. They migrate across oceans and can dive more than 4,000 feet. They are made for speed: built like torpedoes, have retractable fins and their eyes are set flush to their body. They are tremendous predators from the moment they hatch, seeking out schools of fish like heering, mackerel, and even eels. They hunt by sight and have the sharpest vision of any bony fish. (WWF)

The population of the Bluefin Tuna has declined drastically about 96%. Bluefin Tuna is especially sought after by the Japanese to make sushi. Its fatty belly meat is coveted, and one piece of tuna can go for $2,000-$20,000. (The most has been $1.75 million.) The Bluefin Tuna is being overfished and illegally fished. And fisheries have a lack of enforcement and control.
