My Prediction

If food coloring is added to three solutions of water, bleach or a mixture, then the bleach solution will have the most effect on the colors vibrancy as the color will fade. I believe this result will occur because bleach has a stronger chemical reaction that will break down the color.

Results

The pictures above show the results after 5 minutes. As you can see the color vibrancy was most apparrent in the water and least apparrent in the bleach.

How does bleach affect the vibrancy of colors?

1. Fill one of the clear cups with 1/4 cup of room temperature tap water. 2. Add 5 drops of food coloring to the water and observe the vividness of the food coloring while it mixes in the water. 3. Fill the second cup with 1/4 cup of bleach. 4. Add 5 drops of food coloring to the bleach and observe the vividness of the food coloring while ut mixes in the bleach.5. Combine the two cups of mixtures into a single cup.6. Pour the mixture back and forth between cups 3 or 4 times. 7. Let the mixture sit, in open air, for several minutes, observing the changes in color.

How Does It Work? This process is called bleaching, or whitening. In this experiment the bleach was oxidize which occurs by breaking chemical bonds between the molecules of dye. The resulting molecules, after being oxidized, will no longer absorb visible light, resulting in faded colors. Water is able to "fade" color through dissolution. The amount of color is dissolute throughout a larger volume when added to water. The molecules do not actually fade. Rather, the molecules are just spread out, giving the impression that they have lost color.
