The responsibilities of a BME include testing and repairing medical equipment, researching and synthesizing new materials, designing medical devices, supervising laboratories and equipment performance, and collaborating with other professionals in order to meet the needs of the patients.

Many branches of biomedical engineering are involved with safety, medicine, physiology, nursing, and/or medical equipment. Bioinstrumentation deals with the development and application of devices used in diagnosis and treatment of disease, while biomaterials concentrates on living tissue and materials in order to develop implants.

Many schools offer a degree in biomedical engineering, but the following schools boast of having some of the best biomedical programs in the country:- John Hopkins University- Duke University- Massachusetts Institute of Technology- Rice University- Standford University
