[2015] Elizabeth Puente (C&I 5003 Fall 2015): Biography of Hilda Taba

Historical Biography

Hilda Taba was the first of 9 children. She graduated from an all girls school and on the same year she passed her final examination to become an elementary school teacher. Instead of working at a primary school, she became a student at the University of Tartu and completed her graduate studies at Bryn Mawr College in one year.

Taba was impressed with Bode's approach and grew interested in the philosophy of progressive education, she enjoyed that his work was child centered. However, the person who inspired her the most was John Dewey.

Taba had difficulty finding employment in the U. S. but was eventually hired at the Dalton School. She then met Ralph Tyler and provided her with the opportunities that catapulted her to become a capable and widely recognized educational researcher.

In regards to Intergroup Edcuation Taba's research group submitted proposals for increasing the level of tolerance between students from different ethnic and cultural backgrounds illuminating issues in human relations education.



Lasting Impact

Taba's theorizing and curriculum development processes provided a blueprint for curriculum development in the twentieth century. She understood and highlighted the important connections between culture, politics, and social change. Her in-service work with teachers left a permanent and lasting imprint on curriculum development discourse.


Birth & Death

Born in South-East Estonia on December 7, 1902. Died unexpectedly on July 6, 1967 at the peak of her academic cababilities and power.

Taba's Spiral of Curriculum Development was designed to shed light on the understanding of concept development in elementary social studies curriculum to be used by teachers in her workshops.
