[2015] Catherine Grace: Biodiversity

Biodiversity

Importance of biodiversity

Current situation of biodiversity

WWhy we chose this topic?

The variety of life on Earth and its biological diversity is commonly referred as biodiversity. The number of species of plants, animals, and microorganisms, the enormous diversity of genes in these species, the different ecosystems on the planet, such as deserts, rainforests and coral reefs are all part of a biologically diverse Earth.

What is biodiversity?

Causes of loss of biodiversity

Ways to maintain biodiversity and How we are going to approach them

Biodiversity Crisis!-Current extinction rate is faster than natural extinction rate.-30000 species are extincted each year.-Experts predict that half of the world's living species will be extincted in less than 100 years!

1. The change of land use2. Climate change3. Pollution4. Overexploitation of resources5. Changing in human population6. Invasive species

- Boosts ecosystem productivity - An important factor that forms this planet (each species live depends on each other)- A healthy biodiversity would offer many natural services----[For ecosystem: - protect water resources- the storage and recycling of nutrient- pollution breakdown and absorbtion]- Humans are getting biological resources ----- food, medicine, wood products, future resources.(The cost for replacing these (if possible) would be extremely expensive.)

-Education Educating people about the importance of biodiversity so that they will have awareness of biodiversity protection. HOW: - Holding assemblies to talk about the conservation of biodiversity at schools regularly (every year). - Applying to the relevant departments of government and get permission to give people lectures about biodiversity in public places like community centre. - Establishing clubs and Organizing activities Apply to relevant departments of gorvernment to form clubs which aim to protect biodiversity. - Gathering up volunteers - Organzing activities regularly to contribute to the conservation of biodiversity; Activities will have awards for participants.(e.g. Planting trees; Picking up garbages; Recycling) - Proposing laws that can help maintain biodiversity -Proposing laws to the legislative department.(eg: Prohibiting the hunting of some kinds of animals; Restricting the number of animals people can hunt; Banning illegal ivory trade)
