Biomedical engineers are medical problem solvers. They apply their engineering knowledge, in collaboration with chemists and other scientists, to create medical instruments, prosthetic limbs and artificial organs. They also design systems for conducting medical tests and recording medical information. For their work, they are generously compensated. The U.S. Department of Labor studied biomedical engineer salaries in 2006, and set the average salary for biomedical engineers at $56,770. The survey indicated that the highest paid biomedical engineers brought home an average salary of $118,730. The lowest earners, likely encompassing entry level workers with little experience, made $43,410.

Biochemical engineers have to design and develop medical devices such as artificial hearts and kidneys, pacemakers, artificial hips, surgical lasers, automated patient monitors and blood chemistry sensorsdesign and develop engineered therapies (for example, neural-integrative prostheses)adapt computer hardware or software for medical science or health care applications (for example, develop expert systems that assist in diagnosing diseases, medical imaging systems, models of different aspects of human physiology or medical data management)conduct research to test and modify known theories and develop new theoriesensure the safety of equipment used for diagnosis, treatment and monitoringinvestigate medical equipment failures and provide advice about the purchase and installation of new equipmentdevelop and evaluate quantitative models of biological processes and systemsapply engineering methods to answer basic questions about how the body workscontribute to patient assessmentsprepare and present reports for health professionals and the publicsupervise and train technologists and technicians

Most biomedical engineers work in medical manufacturing, pharmaceutical manufacturing, and research and development. There are also opportunities for employment at hospitals and colleges and universities
