Bessie wanted to prove all those haters wrong. She had had enough. She traveled to Paris, France in June. It took her seven months to learn how to fly. She became the first African American pilot.
Brave Bess died on April 30, 1926 at the age of 34. She fell from an open cockpit 3,500 feet above the ground. An estimated 15,000 people attended her funeral in Chiagaco.

Bessie started doing daredevil stunts that earned her the nickname of Brave Bess. Once, she refused to do a show unless the black people were allowed to come and watch. Bess was a success!
At the age of 23, Bessie went to Chiagaco with her older brother. She found a job at Duncan's Barbershop as a manicurist. Bessie listened to her customers gossip about the black fliers.
Bessie Coleman was born in Atlanta, Texas on January 26, 1892. she walked eight miles a day for education. Bessie had 12 other siblings in her family.
