BERLIN WALL

The Berlin Wall is what separated East and West Germany from each other. It was made of concrete and sealed off West Berlin, and the 13-foot-tall wall couldn’t be penetrated unless given permission by the East Germany government. Hundreds were killed trying to sneak through to the West to escape Soviet East Germany. The wall was built in 1961 and started merely as a barricade of stone and tanks, built in a day. It was replaced with a barbed wire fence, too easy to climb over, and then replaced for good with a strip of wall, where guards could easily shoot them.

This terrorized Germany and especially East Germany for almost three decades. In 1987, Ronald Reagan visited Germany and delivered his famous “Tear down this wall!” speech. He challenged them to set the East Germans free and, as said, take down the wall confining them.

In 1989, the USSR began to fall and the Minister of Propaganda, Gunter Schabowski, decided to open the wall just for private visits. On November 9th, 1989, thousands of East Germans flooded the wall and demanded to be let through for visits. When they weren’t given them, they began to chip away at the wall. They were forced to let them all through. Piece of it were integrated into German streets and some in museums.
