Beowulf

BeowulfBy: Jaya Manderson

> A fairytale element that Beowulf presents would be both Good and evil characters. The good Characters would be Beowulf ,"Now Beowulf bode in the burg of the Scyldings, leader beloved, and long he rule in fame with all folk, since his father had goneaway from the world, till awoke an heir, haughty Healfdene, who held through life, sage and sturdy, the Scyldings glad." and the bad character is Grendel, "Grendel this monster grim was called, march-riever 5 mighty, in moorland living, in fen and fastness; fief of the giants the hapless wight a while had kept since the Creator his exile doomed.">Another fairytale element that can be found in Beowulf would be Royalty. This is because there was a king and queen involved along with a kingdom. " Through the hall then went the Helmings’ Lady,to younger and older everywhere carried the cup, till come the momentwhen the ring-graced queen, the royal-hearted, to Beowulf bore the beaker of mead."

Fairytale Elements

The 2 ways Beowulf could be interpreted is as a moral lesson or historic anaylsis. This is because in the story of Beowulf you can gather many moral lessons taught for example bravery will trumph can be a moral taught from the story because of Beowulf's actions and it can be a Historic analysis becuase its preserved as a legend which can be passed down from generation to generation.

Beowulf Interpretation

Symbols

>A symbol in Beowulf was Grendel's arm this is because it showed that Beowulf defeated Grendel."Then farther he hied; for the hardy hero with hand he grasped, felt for the foe with fiendish claw, for the hero reclining, — who clutched it boldly, prompt to answer, propped on his arm. Soon then saw that shepherd-of-evils that never he met in this middle-world, in the ways of earth, another wight with heavier hand-gripe; at heart he feared, sorrowed in soul, — none the sooner escaped! Fain would he flee, his fastness seek, the den of devils: no doings now such as oft he had done in days of old!">Another symbol can be Grendels mother because she represents her personal loss through conflict. "She grasped out for him with grisly claws, and the warrior seized; yet scathed she not his body hale; the breastplate hindered, as she strove to shatter the sark of war, the linked harness, with loathsome hand. Then bore this brine-wolf, when bottom she touched, the lord of rings to the lair she hauntedwhiles vainly he strove, though his valor held, weapon to wield against wondrous monsters that sore beset him; sea-beasts many tried with fierce tusks to tear his mail, and swarmed on the stranger.">Another Symbol could be the cave where grendel and his mother hid from the world this is symbolic because of their lives as outcast."Thence the welter of waters washes up wan to welkin when winds bestir evil storms, and air grows dusk, and the heavens weep. Now is help once more with thee alone! The land thou knowst not, place of fear, where thou findest out that sin-flecked being. Seek if thou dare! I will reward thee, for waging this fight, with ancient treasure, as erst I did, with winding gold, if thou winnest back."

>A motif in Beowulf would be when Beowulf had to go on Impossible task such as he killled sea monsters instead of beating Breca. "Together we twain on the tides abode five nights full till the flood divided us, churning waves and chillest weather, darkling night, and the northern wind ruthless rushed on us: rough was the surge. Now the wrath of the sea-fish rose apace; yet me ’gainst the monsters my mailed coat, hard and hand-linked, help afforded, —battle-sark braided my breast to ward, garnished with gold. ">Another motif in Beowulf can be monsters this is because throughout the epic, Beowulf had to fight many monsters from seamonsters to Grendel and his mother. "THEN from the moorland, by misty crags, with God’s wrath laden, Grendel came. The monster was minded of mankind now sundry to seize in the stately house. Under welkin he walked, till the wine-palace there, gold-hall of men, he gladly discerned, flashing with fretwork.">Another motif in Beowulf could be Quest this is because Beowul was on a quest to kill grendel. "So my vassals advised me well, —brave and wise, the best of men, — O sovran Hrothgar, to seek thee here, for my nerve and my might they knew full well."

The moral of Beowulf is that bravery will triumph. I say this because thoughout the story Beowulf didn't show any signs of fear he knew that in order to end Grendel and his mother he had to be brave he couldn't show any signs of weakness.
