Benjamin was the first American pediatrician to study psychoanalysis to try to understand children's needs and family dynamics.


His book, "Dr. Spock's Baby Child Care" was published in 1946.

He also wrote "Dr. Spock Talks with Mothers," "Raising Children in a Difficult Time," and "Dr. Spock on Parenting."

Spock's "Baby and Child Care" book sold nearly 50 million copies worldwide and has been translated in 39 languages.

Received his medical degree in 1929 from Columbia University.

He trained for six years at the New York Psychoanalytic Institute.

He Won an Olympic Gold Medal in rowing in 1924 while attending Yale.

He was born in New Haven, Connecticut, and was the oldest of six children.
